Tabatabai believed in incompleteness of Uthmani mushaf

Tabatabai writes:

All in all, what these narrative sources prove is that whatever is present between the two covers of the printed Qur’an is the Word of Allah. Nothing has been added to it, and nothing has been tampered with therein. However, they do not prove with definiteness that some part of the text is not missing.

...,,The above narrations, as you can see are narrated by individuals (not multiple narrators) which are strengthened by other corroborative evidences that definitely rules out any distortion of the Qur’anic text by addition or tampering. However there is no corroborative evidence for these individual reports that there is nothing missing from the text. Hence, the doctrine that no part o the text has been lost, is simply speculative. The claim by some that the Qur’anic text has been faultlessly preserved by numerous narrators in all three aspects (i.e. addition, tampering or subtraction of words) has no authoritative evidence.

Vaheed Behbehani on incompleteness of Uthmani mushaf

Vaheed Behbehani (usooli scholar) writes:

In Quran didn’t happen any change which would prevent from relying upon it. And companions agreed in that. But they differed regarding did change happen or not. And what is apparent from many narrations is that it has happened.

Imams(as) ordered us to read the Uthmani Mushaf

Al Jazairi writes:

“If one should be asking, how reading in it can be permitted, while it has been subjected to changes, i say that it has been transmitted in the reports that the Imams (as) ordered their followers to read this existing Qur’an in prayer and outside of it and to act according to its judgements until our Master, the Master of Time (as),appears, whereupon this Qur’an ascends from the hands of men into heaven and the Qur’an is brought forth, which the Commander of the Faithful (as) wrote, so that it may be read and acted upon according to his judgments.”

 Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Abi Hashim reported that Salim Ibn Salamah said: “Someone was reading near Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq) while I was listening to Qur’anic wordings which people do not read like that.” Then Abu Abdillah (a.) said: “Do not read in this way. Read as the people read until the Riser (Qa’im) rises. When the Riser rises, he reads the scripture of God in its limits and brings forth the codex (Mus’haf) that Ali (as) wrote down.” He said: “Ali (as) brought it out to the people when he finished it and wrote it down. So he said to them: “This is the scripture of God as God sent it down to Muhammad (s) and I have collected it from both tablets.” Then they said: “Here it is. We have a codex (Mus’haf) in which the Qur’an is collected. We do not need it.” So he said: “Behold, by God, you will never see it after this day of yours. It was only my duty to inform you as soon as I had collected it so that you could read it.”

Mazandarani believed in incompleteness of the uthmani mushaf

 Hadith#28 

Quran which was sent down by Jibril was 17000 verses long.

I(mazandarani) say: That which exceeds in verses of that what is written in hadith was removed through alteration and that some Quran was removed and altered is accordingly proven in our ways in mutawatir form as it becomes clear to those who read our books from beginning to the end.”

Al Mufid believed in incompleteness of the Uthmani Mushaf

“I say that innumerable traditions were reported by the rightly guided imams from the family of Muhammad (s.) about differences in the Qur’an and what the tyrants did in it in terms of deletion and removal. About the compilation it has to be said that in the existing one the latter part is shifted forward and the former backward and as is known, the abolishing and abolished part and the Meccan and Medinan part we mentioned were not arranged in order.”

The Holy Quran is protected by The Imams(as)

Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Talhah Ibn Ubaidillah said: “O father of Hasan, i want to ask you about something. I saw you come out with a sealed robe and said: “O you people, i was continuously busy with the washing of the dead of the Prophet Muhammad (s.) and his wrapping in a shroud and his burial. Then i went after the book of God until i collected it. So this is the book of God in a collection, not a single letter of which is missing.” But i didn’t see the book you wrote and compiled. I saw that Umar sent someone to you to send it to me in his time of succession, but you refused to carry it out and Umar called people to him. If two gave their testimony about a verse, he wrote it down and if none but one gave his testimony about it, he rejected it and did not write it down. I heard that Umar said: “On the day of Yamamah, men were killed who used to read the Qur’an that no one but them read, whereupon it disappeared and a sheep approached a page – and the scribes of Umar wrote down – and ate it, whereupon what was in it disappeared and on that day the scribe was Uthman. What do you say?I heard Umar and his companions, who were writing what was written at the time of Uthman, say: “The chapter Al-Ahzab had the extent of the chapter Al-Baqarah (286 verses) and An-Nur had 160 verses and Al-Hujurat had 90 verses.” What about that? What stopped you, God have mercy on you, from going out to them with what you wrote for the people? I saw Uthman taking what Umar wrote and he collected the book for him. He gave the people a single reading and tore and burned the copy of Ubayy Ibn Ka’b and Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud with fire. What about this?” Ali (a.) said: “O Talhah, every verse that God sent down to Muhammad (s.) in His book is with me, in that the Messenger (s.) dictated it and my hand wrote it down and the interpretation of every verse that God sent down to Muhammad (s. ) and every permitted or forbidden or boundary punishment or judgment or matter that the community needs until the Day of Resurrection is with me written down in that the Messenger (s.) dictated it and my hand wrote it down, all the way to the compensation for the smallest scratch.” Talhah said: “All things, whether small or great or special or general, whether it was or will be until the Day of Resurrection is written down with you?” Ali (a.) said: “Yes, and besides this, the Messenger (s.) entrusted to me during his illness a thousand gates of knowledge, each gate of which opens a thousand gates. If the community had followed and obeyed me from the time when God took His Prophet (s.) to Himself, they would have prospered above and below their feet until the Day of Resurrection.”

Chapter The complete Quran is preserved by The Imams(as)

Jabir reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “No one among the people claims to have completely collected the Qur’an as it was sent down, except a liar, because no one collected and guarded it as God sent it down, except Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) and the Imams (a.) after him.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ‘Ammar ibn Marwan from al-Munakhkhal from Jabir from abu Ja‘far (a.s.) who has said the following. “No one is able to claim that with him is the whole of the Holy Quran; its apparent and hidden essence, except the executors of the will of the Holy Prophet (s.a.).

Chapter The complete Quran is With The Imams(as) 

It is narrated to us by Muhammad Bin Al Husayn, from Muhammad Bin Sinan, from Ammar Bin Marwan, from Al Munakhal, from Jabir, From Abu Ja’far (as) who said: ‘There is no one capable of claiming that he collected the Quran, all of it, its apparent and its esoteric, apart from the successors.

It is narrated to us by Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Al Hassan Bin Mahboub, from Amro bin Abu Al Miqdam, from Jabir who said,

I heard Abu Ja’far(as)  saying: ‘There is no one from the people who can say he collected the Quran, all of it, just as Allah (swt) Revealed, except a liar, and no one collected it and preserved it just as Allah (swt) Revealed except Ali asws Bin Abu Talib (as) and the Imams (as) from after Him ’’.

It is narrated to us by Abdullah Bin Aamir, from Abu Abdullah Al Barqy, from Al Hassan Bin Usman, from Muhammad Bin Fuzeyl, from Abu Hamza Al Sumali, From Abu Ja’far (as) having said: : ‘I cannot find anyone from this community to have collected the Quran, except the successors(Imams){as}.

By claiming that Uthman(la) compiled The Holy Quran perfectly, one is taking a virtue away from Ahlul Bayt(as) and ascribes it to Their enemy.As its quite clear from many ahadith(which we cant fit all in this post) in our classical works that the original mainstream belief of the shia was that only The Imams(as) and no one else compiled the complete Quran.
